Top Reasons to Amend a Return

If any of these apply to you, there\'s likely refund money owed.

Missed the QBI Deduction

The 20% (now 23%) Qualified Business Income deduction is missed constantly by chain preparers. If you owned an S-Corp, LLC, or sole prop in any of the last 3 years, this is likely the biggest single recovery.

Forgot a 1099 or W-2

Late-arriving 1099s often get missed. Worse, IRS already knows about them β€” a CP2000 is coming. Amending proactively is cheaper than responding to the notice later.

Missed Retirement Contribution Deduction

SEP-IRA, Solo 401(k), and Traditional IRA contributions made before April 15 of the following year are deductible for the prior year β€” often overlooked by busy filers.

Childcare Tax Credit Mistakes

The credit is now up to 50% of $8,000 in expenses ($4,000 max per child). Many returns claim $600 (the old limit). Amending recovers thousands.

Home Office / Schedule C Errors

If you had self-employment income but didn\'t deduct home office, vehicle, health insurance, or self-employment tax adjustment β€” you overpaid. Common amendment recovery.

Wrong Filing Status

Single filers who qualify as Head of Household save $1,400-$3,200/year. Married filers who should file MFS for income-based loans get the wrong amount. We re-evaluate.

Amended Returns β€” Frequently Asked Questions

How long do I have to amend a return?

Generally 3 years from the original filing date OR 2 years from the date tax was paid β€” whichever is later. For 2022 returns filed April 2023, your amendment deadline is April 2026. We track the deadline precisely.

Will amending trigger an audit?

No β€” amendments don't increase audit risk if filed correctly. IRS audits about 0.4% of returns regardless. What raises audit flags is incorrect math, missing schedules, or unsupported deductions. A CPA-prepared amendment is reviewed carefully to avoid those.

How much does amending cost?

For a return we originally prepared: $250-$450. For amending a return prepared elsewhere: $400-$750 depending on complexity. We provide a flat-fee quote after reviewing the original return.

When will I get the refund?

Amended return refunds take 16-20 weeks via paper Form 1040-X. E-filed amendments (now allowed for 2019+) process in 8-12 weeks. We track status via Where's My Amended Return.

Can you amend multiple years at once?

Yes β€” each year requires a separate Form 1040-X. We commonly amend 2-3 years simultaneously when retroactive eligibility for a credit is discovered (e.g., ERC, Earned Income Credit, retirement contributions).
